Lutz NAUMANN

March 30, 1995

Dear Colleagues:

I have the sad duty to inform you that our friend and colleague Lutz Naumann has died today, at the age of 59 years, from a cruel illness that he has supported with admirable self-control and courage.

Lutz joined the CERN staff on October 1, 1961, after having worked for the Leitz company in Germany. Important milestones of his career at CERN were the optical system of the 2 m bubble chamber at the PS, the MWPC system of the Split Field Magnet detector at the ISR, and the UA1 experiment.

In SMC, Lutz worked primarily on the polarised target, in particular on the logistics and on the general mechanical and cryogenics infrastructure. With his characteristic blend of engineering skills and unobtrusive efficiency, he has contributed greatly to the successful construction and smooth operation of this delicate instrument which is at the very heart of our experiment. He enjoyed profoundly his work in the SMC polarised target group where he had the opportunity to work in a stimulating and productive environment on a technically challenging project. After the installation of the target had been completed, he also started to work part-time on the ATLAS detector.

We will remember Lutz with lasting thankfulness, and express our sympathy to his wife Susanne, his children Bettina, Bernd, and Joerg, and to their families.
