gas alarms

1) empty gas bottle notification:

Strictly speaking this is no alarm, but a signal that the gas distribution system in bld. 908 switches to a new gas bottle. It is expected that this "alarm" occures from time to time, wich indicates that the system is working properly!  Nevertheless, the gas bottles should be checked by the shift crew.

Actions to be taken by the shift crew:

• acknowledge  alarm by pressing  the button
• check pressure of gas bottles in distribution racks in bld. 908 to identify the empty bottle:
• each rack has two bottles / set of bottles (standing in front of the rack: on the left and on the right side) connected to it
• racks in use (starting on the left side in the big room):
• CF₄
• Ne
• Ethane (C₂H₆)
• Methane 1 (CH4)
• Methane 2 (CH4) - small room ( standing in front of bld. 908: the last door  on the right )
• the system switches between the two set of bottles if the pressure in one branch drops well below  20 bar  on the manometer  at the connection to the bottles, NOT the manometers in the distribution rack! These can still display some pressure, even if the system has already switched to the other branch)
• if there is a second full bottle / set of full bottles connected to one of the branches => NO IMMEDIATE ACTION has to be taken! Just inform the responsible  expert at some time ( for 2002: Eric Weise )
• if there is no full bottle in one of the branches: call expert

2) flammable gas alarm:

siren and flashing panels in the hall ( it is considerably louder than alarm no. 1!)

Actions to be taken by the shift crew:
 

acknowledge  alarm by pressing  the button

call expert  (Deputy TC: Eric Weise or GLIMOS/TC: Gerhard Mallot) AND call TCR  - in case of an level 3 alarm, the TCR technicians and the fire brigade will arrive automaticaly

check which detection head caused the alarm: the panel is in the flammable gas detection system racks (lower level, next to the RICH barrack) but don't touch it! The head can be identified by its number (list is attached to one of the racks).

call expert of the concernd detector - in case of an alarm at least the gas system has to be checked and restarted but eventually an leak search has to be performed (for this case an detector expert should be present)
