Dear Colleague, we have to submit the beam time request for the SPS and PS test beam areas. Normally the tests will take place in the X5 area. However, some special conditions, like low energy hadroasn (<10 GeV) or high intensity muons, cannot not be obtained in X5. We plan to also make available the M2 beamline in the COMPASS Experimental Hall 888 for some tests starting July 1999. Please return the form appended below by not later them September 25 for the SPS and October 2 for the PS Many groups (ATLAS/CMS) need muons in the GIF downstream of X5. This is only possible for similar secundary and tertial energies, which typically means pions > 70 GeV in X5. Please indicate clearly in case your measurements are incompatible with such conditions. I will collect the requests and send them to the co-ordinator. For the PS beams please have a look into the web pages mentioned below. In any case the request should go via me in order to avoid confusion. For M2 we will request something like a month for test really needing the special beam conditions. Best regards, Gerd ------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the SPS Co-ordinator: SPS: The SPS accelerator schedule for 1999 has not yet been released since its details are still under discussion. Nevertheless, it seems very probable by now that the schedule for 1999 will consist of a proton run starting in May and ending at the beginning of October, and which is to be followed by a heavy-ion run during October/November. PS: The PS accelerator schedule for 1999 has not yet been released since its details are still under discussion. Nevertheless, it seems very probable by now that the PS East Hall schedule for 1999 will consist of a run starting at the end of April and finishing at the end of November. The relevant forms for your request have been sent to you via paper mail and are also available on the World Wide Web at: http://www.cern.ch/PSschedule/pindex.html under the headings `Guidelines for Use of PS Test Beams' and `Required Forms'. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Testbeam Form for 1999: 1. institute, contact person: 2. detector to be tested: 3. periods foreseen for the tests: a) total time: b) preferred dates: 4. do you handle with flamable gases (no, which ones): 5. longitudinal size of the detector (including frames etc): [cm]: [radiation lengths]: [interaction lengths]: 6. transverse size of the detector [cm]: 7. beam: a) energy [GeV]: b) If several, which time fraction above 70 GeV?: 8. beam partciles (electrons, hadrons, muons): 9. desired rate [particles/spill]: 2000 10. independent tracking required (yes, no): 11. readout electronics needed: 12. special space requirements in counting cut (none, which): 13: special requirements: -------------------------------------------------------------------------
